Is VoIP Appropriate for Residential Use?

Considering the achievements of Voice over Internet Protocol in the communication industry, it has not only become the most wanted telephony service by business users but also by residential users. VoIP residential subscribers are increasing rapidly. Initially when VoIP services were introduced, there was great uncertainty concerning the networks security and clarity of telephone calls. With the span of time, the world switched to high-speed broadband internet. To ensure maximum quality VoIP technology needed high speed broadband internet connectivity. Wide spread of high-speed broadband internet connections brought VoIP technology on the front line making it the most wanted phone service. Low cost and high savings along with additional standard features provided for an extra charge by regular phone companies was surely an attractive aspect of VoIP. IP telephony allowed immense amount of flexibility to its users.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology as mentioned earlier runs via the internet, hence it allowed its customers to make and receive phone calls. Conventional phone services transmit your voice analogue signals from end to another end. However, on the other hand, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology as mentioned earlier uses the internet connection to transmit data; it converts the analogue voice signal on one end and converts it to digital data, which is then transmitted to the intended user where it is converted back into analogue voice signal. This is the case if it is a VoIP to VoIP call. On the other hand, if it is a VoIP to non-VoIP call, then the digital signal is transmitted to the local area gateway where it is converted to analogue signal and transmitted to the intended user.

When a call is made between two VoIP users, there is actually a small box attached to the modem or router, which converts the digital signal to analogue signal enabling the person at the other end to hear the call. Conversion to a digital signal and then back to analogue is surely an impressive technology. What makes it even more impressive is that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) allows you to make long distance and international calls at a fraction of the rate charged my conventional telephone companies allowing you to get in touch with your loved ones and friends at a very low cost.

Some of the features that are offered with residential VoIP services as compared to a conventional phone service grant you flexibility beyond your imagination. For instance if you live in Chicago and majority of your family and friends live in New York, every month you will have to pay high telephone bills due to long distance calling. VoIP on the other hand allows you to keep a New York prefix number in Chicago, so when you call your friends and family in New York it will be a local call. This feature is also very useful for business owners as it allows their clients to contact the business easily without creating a communication gap. Voicemail is firstly a standard feature with a VoIP service and you do not have to pay extra to avail the service. Secondly, your voice messages are sent directly to your email account allowing you to check your voice messages with any hindrance. You can even bare number from which you do not wish to accept calls.

Considering the above-mentioned advantages of residential VoIP services, if you have a high-speed internet connection and you make long distance and international calls, then it would be unfair on your wallet if you did not buy a VoIP service.
